Your Minimum Wage Depends on Where You Work
This trips a lot of people up. Most of the Valley, including Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Reseda, Northridge, Sherman Oaks, Encino, and Studio City, is inside the City of Los Angeles, where the minimum wage is $18.42 an hour since July 1, 2026. Burbank is its own city with no general minimum wage ordinance, so the state’s $16.90 applies to most jobs there. Unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County have their own rate of $18.47 since July 1, 2026. The address of the job is what counts, not where you live.

In warehouses and manufacturing, it’s rounded time punches, unpaid pre-shift time, and seven-day weeks without the overtime that comes with them. In restaurants, it’s missed breaks, on-call scheduling, and covered fast-food workers paid less than the $20 state minimum for their industry. In production, it’s 12-hour days paid as if they were 8, and crew members treated as contractors.

If You Work for a City, County, or School District
Claims against public employers can have shorter deadlines. For some kinds of damages, you have to file a government claim within six months before you can sue. Discrimination claims under the Fair Employment and Housing Act follow their own process through the Civil Rights Department, generally within three years. If your employer is a public agency, call sooner rather than later.
